Tata Zest : The Best Sedan Car in India

Tata Motors Limited (TML) is one of the oldest Indian multinational company engaged in the manufacture of automobiles. They have hatchbacks, sedans and utility vehicles in their portfolio. In the Indian automobile market there is a good demand for the fuel efficient compact cars. The TMIL had launched the compact sedan the Zest on 12th August 2014 which was unveiled during the 2014 Indian auto expo.

The Zest is a sub-four metre sedan and appears like a hatchback with an added boot. There are 5 diesel and 4 petrol variants priced between Rupees 4.85 and 7.31 lakh ex-showrooms. The features at the front include the stretched projector type headlamps, chrome strips bordering the plastic grille giving it a glossy look, an integrated body coloured bumper with running daylight LED lamps, ORVMs with turn signals and round fog lamps. The rear has wrap around type LED tail lights surrounded by chrome strips and excessive chrome on the boot lid around the logo.

The Tata Zest has a black and beige interior. The standard features include an engine immobiliser, central locking with key, child lock facilities, a manual AC power steering with tilt adjustment, fabric seats, power windows at the front and internally operated ORVMs in body colour with turn indicators. The top variants have remote central locking system, an automatic AC, 2 air bags, ABS, EBD, electric ORVMs and a 2 Din music system with touch screen controls and Bluetooth connectivity for telephony and audio controls.

The petrol variants have 1.2L, 89 bhp and 140 NM torque engines with economy, city and sports drive modes. In the sports mode engines give maximum torque. The diesel versions have 1248 cc, 89 bhp engines with normal and sports drive modes with normal as default mode. The driver can select the mode as per the situation. The Zest XMT version has an AMT (Auto Manual) transmission. The mileages are 17.6 kmpl for the petrol and 23.0 kmpl for the diesel variants.

The dimensions of the Zest are 3995 mm length, 1706 mm width, 1570 mm height, 2470 mm wheel base and 175 mm ground clearance. The brakes are disc type at the front and the drum type at the rear. The suspension is independent McPherson strut type with coil spring at the front and the semi independent torsion beam type with coil springs at the rear.

The Tata sedan car Zest is competitively priced and has sufficient comfort and safety features. The availability of the diesel automatic transmission variant is advantageous. The main drawback of the car is the small capacity boot. The competition for the Zest comes from the likes of Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the Honda Amaze and the Hyundai Xcent.
